The University of Alabama has been educating dietitians on the University campus for over seventy-five years and has offered a distance learning degree program for more than ten years!

We serve a wide variety of students from all different academic backgrounds and with varying academic goals. Whether you are an undergraduate student just starting your college career, a post-graduate student seeking a verification statement to become a Registered Dietitian, or a graduate student working toward a master’s degree, we have a program for you!


B.S. in Food and Nutrition

The curriculum of the food and nutrition major is designed to prepare students for careers in health care facilities, community-health-nutrition programs, food-service management and business.

B.S. in Food and Nutrition + Didactic Program in Dietetics (DPD)

This program is accredited by ACEND and The University of Alabama’s DPD program is accredited by ACEND, and this program prepares graduates to enter dietetic internships where they can apply the theories they learn as undergraduates in various areas of practice including clinical, community, and food service under the supervision of a Registered Dietitian.

Accelerated Master's Program (AMP)

The AMP program is for first-time undergraduate students on a fast track for the M.S. in Human Nutrition who are also interested in becoming a Registered Dietitian. Students in this program may count up to 12 credit hours toward both their undergraduate and graduate degrees.

  • Must have a 3.7+ overall institutional (UA) GPA and 90+ credit hours.
  • Students must also have taken the prerequisite courses before applying.

DPD Only

This option is ideal for students that want to earn the DPD Verification Statement to be eligible to apply for dietetic internships. Students will enroll in the undergraduate Food and Nutrition major as a post-graduate to pursue this option.

DPD Course List

M.S. in Human Nutrition + DPD (MS + DPD)

This option allows students to complete earn both the DPD Verification Statement and MS in Human Nutrition. Most students will begin by enrolling in the undergraduate Food and Nutrition major to take any remaining prerequisite courses.
